Okay, so it’s pretty scary how different we can look depending on what we’re doing that day. Here are some common looks that we all share. Warning: some of them aren’t pretty…
PolishedLook: This is one of our best looks. Our make-up is in place, our outfit may even be clean and if we’re having a great day, perhaps our shoes will even match our clothing. This look takes effort and money. As busy women, we tend to avoid it whenever possible.
CoffeeLook: When we go out to meet a friend for coffee, we usually dress in something cute and we may even wear makeup. But don’t push it. Our clothes are probably outdated and worn looking and our shoes will be comfy sandals. This is a cute look. Although we don’t look as great as we do when polished, it’s not bad.
FrumpyLook: Ugh, as you already know, this one is the worst. It’s how we dress when we’re home alone or with the kids. Our clothes are probably stained and look like rags (and that’s assuming we even got out of our PJs.) Forget hair and makeup. Those are reserved for “special occasions.”
The Real Me
There’s such a difference between these three looks that I often wonder — which one is the “real” me?
My friend, they are ALL the real you. You are a complex person with so many roles. You are each and every role and you are doing your best.
Revise the FrumpyLook
Even though every role is part of us, the FrumpyLook isn’t very flattering, is it? Whenever I have the FrmpyLook going on and I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I cringe and feel terrible about myself. The next day I get ready for work and the PolishedLook emerges and I wonder how I can be the same person when I look so different at home.
Increase Our Confidence
How can we have a wonderful day if we have the FrumpyLook going on? If every time we see ourselves we cringe? It’s not fair to us or our families. Why should our best look be reserved for work or other fancy occasions?
Easing In
Of course, we have the FrumpyLook going on because it takes just too much energy to do anything else. Buying clothes feels like a tremendous effort and actually putting on makeup feels like we’re taking a three-mile hike.
I challenge you to rethink your routine. Going from FrumpyLook to PolishedLook is too much effort. But what about CoffeeLook? We can do CoffeeLook! Just a little make-up and a casual outfit that doesn’t look too bad.
Do it for you
You will feel 1,000 times better about yourself and your life if you take a few minutes in the morning to get dressed in something nice and put on a little make-up. Even if you’re home alone and no one sees you, you should put on something nice. You will see yourself and you are important. You need beauty and joy in your life. And if you’re wearing stained rags, you will feel like a rag. And that’s not what I want for you.
So today, put on a nice shirt and a little mascara, even if no one but you will see it. You’ll be surprised that it takes the same amount of work to put on a nice shirt as it does to put on a crappy one. Yes, the makeup will take a few extra minutes, but the difference you’ll feel every time you see yourself will make those few minutes worth it. You are so worth those few minutes!
