This article has realistic tips and hacks to help you fit self-care into your day, even if you’re incredibly busy. All the ideas listed actually take no extra time! You can find time for self-care, really!
Self-Care Ideas that Take No Extra Time
One of the biggest myths about self-care is that it takes “too much time.” I agree – I’m busy, too. I don’t have time to get my nails done or my hair cut. Heck, I’m lucky if I get to eat breakfast most days!
Luckily, self-care isn’t about going to the spa every month or getting your nails done once every blue moon. It’s about how you take care of yourself each day so you feel energized and revitalized.
Self-care doesn’t need to take extra time out of your day. There’s so much you can do throughout the day to take care of yourself so you feel happier and less run-down.
Below are suggestions that won’t take any extra time out of your day, but they’ll still help you fill your cup.
Go Outside. Being outdoors is powerful! It raises your endorphins, makes you feel more alert, and can even boost your creativity. An easy way to do self-care is to simply move your regular tasks outdoors. If you drink coffee in the morning, can you drink it outside? Are you working on your laptop? If so, can you take it to your porch? If the weather is bad, you can try sitting in a sunny room with as much natural light as possible.
Wear Something Uplifting. Your clothes affect how you feel about yourself. When you wear something old and worn or uncomfortable, you feel “off” all day. Wear something that makes you feel great! Even if you’ll be home alone all day (lucky you!), wear something that will make you feel good about yourself.
Unplug. Checking your phone may be more exhausting than you realize. Between focusing on a tiny screen with small words (headaches, anyone?), taking in new information, and communicating, it can be exhausting. Taking a break for just a few hours can help you feel rejuvenated and more energized. If this is difficult for you, try putting your phone in airplane mode so your notifications won’t pop up.
Listen to Music. Listening to music is something that many people do not need a reminder to do. However, if you’re incredibly busy like me, I always forget about this simple, but amazingly effective way to easily build self-care into my day. I enjoy Pandora (an online music subscription service) since I can create customized stations to uplift my mood.
Stop Multi-Tasking. I love to multi-task, don’t you? It’s a great feeling to get two things done at the same time! But unfortunately, it takes a toll on our bodies. Humans weren’t designed to multi-task. Studies show that we actually get LESS done when doing two things at once because our brains have to switch back and forth. When you focus on only one thing at a time, it slows you down and re-energizes you. You’ll get things done faster in the long-run, too!
Diffuse Essential Oils. If you’ve never used Essential Oils, you’re in for a treat! They can have a powerful effect on your mood. I especially love using citrus oils (lime, orange, grapefruit, or lemon) to uplift my mood. Diffusing an oil is a great way to give yourself self-care, even if you’re incredibly busy.
Drink Water. Drinking water is one of the easiest ways you can do self-care. Sometimes the easiest things can give us the biggest impact. Studies show that being even a little dehydrated can make us feel tired. Moms, we’re tired enough as it is! If we can make ourselves feel more alert and prevent headaches just by sipping our water bottles throughout the day, why not?! I like to add a drop or two of a good quality essential oils to my water, such as tangerine (my fav!) or lime. This makes drinking water tastier. Just check to make sure that the brand you use is safe for internal use. I use doTerra oils.
Give it a Try!
I hope that you will be inspired to do some of the suggestions in this list! More importantly, though, I hope that this article helped challenge any myths you had that self-care takes “too much time.”
